Stop SPAM filters and ISPs from "eating" your strategic email messages!

Dear Internet Marketer

You've probably heard and read thousands times that "the money's in the list.". Without questions, building a huge, targeted and responsive list is one of the best ways to drive qualified traffic to any website and increase your conversion ratio So you spend considerable time and money creating, growing and "nurturing" your subscribers with quality, valuable information. According to an article in the June 2004 issue of Time Magazine, 40% to 70% of email sent to the four major ISPs is deleted at the server. Marketers themselves estimate that as much as 15% of their legitimate e-mail communication (emails for which recipients have opted-in) is getting labeled as spam. Consumers, on the other hand report that roughly one-third of desired email is not getting through to them, because it is being blocked by spam filters

The filtering itself can be broken down into three groups: content based, volume based and blacklist filtering. Blacklists are lists of IP addresses that are associated with known and alleged spammers

So, what can you, as a legitimate e-mail marketer can do to ensure that your messages reach
the intended prospects and subscribers?. I would like to analize some present solutions and their drawbacks:

  • Reformat your message's content "hiding" some key words like F.RR.E and other combination of words, trying to avoid firing the SPAM rules. The problem here is that these "tricks" lower your message's effectiveness because you just can't use the necessary "power" in your words to correctly transmit your ideas. Just check the following  recommendations some people do to avoid firing SPAM rules, to see how severely limited are you when sending your content:

1) Don't ever send more then 250 emails concurrently to AOL
2) Don't EVER embed an image in an email
3) Don't use caps anywhere in your email, especially in your subject line
4) Don't send an email without checking your Spam trigger word content**
5) Don't use the word "remove," use "unsubscribe"
6) Don't start your subject line with "Dear..."
7) Don't use Spam software to send email
8) Don't use your PC as a server
9) Don't forge headers
10) Don't put ADV in your subject line
11) Don't send an email without checking to see if you or your ISP is on a Blacklist**
12) Don't over use punctuation (just one !)
13) Don't leave headers blank
14) Don't use BCC to send emails (and certainly not CC)
15) Don't over use Marketing Phrases**
16) Don't use the Priority option
17) Don't change the time on your server so your email stays on top of the heap
18) Don't overuse HyperLinks
19) Don't use a fake IP address to send email
20) Don't use HTML (sorry)

  • Have your list members "white list" or "approve"  you or add you to their address book when they first subscribe. Let's face it: people are lazy. How many of your prospects/subscribers do you think will take the time to do it? 

  • Run every email that you plan to broadcasting (or even some personal emails) through a system that scores the email. It's a kind of simulated filtering that let you know with words will trigger the filters. The problem now is that this approach costs additional money (to pay the service) and since the SPAM filters are evolving continually, requires constant updates (just like the antivirus signatures).

  • Some systems automatically returns a message - a challenge - requiring the sender to perform a task such as filling out a form. The idea here is that a "blast" program cannot answer the challenge, so it must be spam!. Would you like to waste your time filling this forms?
